Media Internship

Media Internship

Position: Media Internship

Length: May 17 – September 5, 2017 (dates are flexible)

Description: You will work with our other staff to inspire the next generation of scientists through social media and digital marketing. Your main objective will be to produce, on average, 5 minutes of video content every week to be published on YouTube and Facebook. You also will be expected to make regular (daily or every other day) posts to social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. To gather the necessary content, you will have the opportunity to join public dig programs (when space allows), work in the preparation lab, and go on staff-only expeditions. Published content must align with our mission “Education through Research.”

Other duties may include working the front desk, maintaining exhibits, performing janitorial duties, etc. With such a small staff on hand, everyone must do their part to make this summer successful.

About Us: The Two Medicine Dinosaur Center is small natural history museum located along the Rocky Mountain Front in Bynum, MT, one and a half hours south of Glacier National Park. We serve about 5,000 visitors a year between May and September, many of which are traveling between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. The thing that sets us apart from other museums in the state is that we offer public dig programs, in which we invite just regular people to dig with us. Our mission can be boiled down to “Education through Research” and so we try to include the public in as much of our operations as we can. Dig program participants help us in the field with exploration, excavation, and extraction, and in the lab with cleaning and piecing back together fossils, while museum visitors can directly observe lab activities through a large window.

Because we are so small and so open, we place a heavy emphasis on customer service and interactions, both in person and online. Regardless of what position you are applying for, you will, no doubt, have to answer visitor questions, entertain children, be on your feet all day, and do it all with a smile.

However, you will be able to gain experience in more than customer service. We teach all of our new staff the basic skills needed for a career in paleontology, including quarry methods, note-taking, bone and fossil identification (sometimes poop too), lab methods, and reading the local geology. Although these things may not be directly related to producing YouTube videos, we still feel it is important to learn the basics, especially when creating content for a museum.

Minimum Qualifications:

– must be 18 or older

– have a high school diploma or equivalent

– be able to lift up to 50 lbs unaided

– be able to walk up to 5 miles per day on uneven terrain

– be comfortable with speaking to all age groups

Desired Qualifications:

– a background or interest in science

– prior experience working with the public

– prior experience producing and publishing quality video

– bending over, crouching, scrambling, lifting, pulling

– must maintain energy and positivity throughout a 9-hour day in the field

Living Accommodations:

We aren’t quite in the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from here. Bynum is a small town of 31 people and the nearest town is Choteau, 13 miles south. Choteau only has 1800 people. All of our seasonal staff live in trailers on museum property but these are only hooked up to electricity, so no water, propane, or sewage. Fortunately, there is a shower, washer, dryer, and kitchen located in the museum for the staff to share. There is no janitor, so it is the staff’s responsibility to keep these areas clean and presentable. There is little to no cell service unless you have Verizon. Wifi is available, but slow due to all the use during the summer, so don’t expect to watch Netflix every night and have it be perfect. We have a fire pit.

Other:

– wages: $300 monthly stipend, $8.15/hr for desk duty when needed

Application Documents:

– Current Resume

– Cover Letter

– Three (3) References

– Portfolio of previous work (can be emailed, linked, or sent via hard copy)

By April 1, 2017 please send your resumé, cover letter, references and portfolio to
